普段触れない英語に触れよう！ 難しい絵画の解説文を読んでみた 前編
先日の記事でも書かせていただきましたが、フィリピンの美術館に行ってきました。その際に作品の解説を読んでたのですが、知らない単語ばかりで、いちいち辞書を引かないと内容が理解できないものばかり。
美術作品の解説の英語は、普段使わない語彙が多くこれは勉強になるなーと。
僕は旅行が好きで、旅先で美術館や博物館へ行く機会もあるので、こういった文章も難無く読めるようになるためにも、記事にしてみました。
英文の解説文を読んでこの単語、表現は難しい！と思ったところを切り出して、単語の意味を挙げたいと思います。解説文は、絵の横に書いてあった解説を記事に打ち込んだものとなります。

作品名：Ultimo Cinco (1993) 作者： Mark Justiniani
英文解説
A witty parody of Leonardo da Vinci's The Last Supper Mark Justiniani's Ultimo Cinco depicts a gang of gamblers eagerly awaiting the fall of a die and the outcome of a bet. The central figure has cast the die so high in the air that it is out of sight,and in so doing, he assumes apose of benediction,seemingly Christlike with his eyes averted upwards and hence, skywards. Most of the gathered look up at the direction of his hands, save for a sly bestacled rogue who pinches a 500 peso bill from the bettor's table, unknown to his peers. The gesture of surprise that is registered at da Vinci's Last Supper (as a result of Chrits's announement of his impending betrayal) is appropriated by Justiniani as a gesture of anticipation, humorously transposed here in another context. Justiniani painted this canvas for his first one-man show, Kasimanwa in 1993 at the Hiraya Gallery in Manila. The work forms part of a series that describes episodes of the townsfolk (Kasimanwa) of Victorias ,Negros Occidental in visual anedotes of everyday life.

英文解説
The painting bears all the footprints of a dream, with its tell-tale elements of an impossible space. Indeed the picture is all about such elusive spaces, of hallways and doorways that lead to unknown places and the infinity of the sky seen to lie below where the structure is located.
To add: markings on the balcony balustrade illustrate a four-lane avenue with street lights and cars passing by. We have a lone female,wearing a mysterious smile and satchel, looking out into the open expanse of blue, where a sea of clouds float idly by but not without some form of intrusion. Indeed it is this cloud-filled sky-with all its softness of form and fluidity - that seems to challenge the bright but very linear world of reverie that our lone protagonist seems to be lost in. Ninel Constantino evokes the simultaneity of worlds, of the many dimensions that co-exist in a seamless space. Parallel universes of the probable.

どうでしたか？なかなか普段触れない語彙が多く、わかりやすく読ませる文章じゃないので、手こずったのではないかと思います。正直自分自身まだ、完全に理解してない文章がいくつかあります。
こーゆー文章は試験勉強や仕事だけではなかなか出会わないので、やはり様々な体験をして、日常的に英語に触れることが大切だなーと感じました。
